In the Middle Ages, in the Taurus mountains watchtowers were built by Saracen. Saracen meant anyone (Arab, Turk, or of any other nationality) who had adopted the Islamic faith. Earlier in the Roman world, in the first three centuries AD, Saracens (Greek: Sarakenoi) had been mentioned by late classical writers.
