Cilician pirates were sea bandits who terrorized the Mediterranean in antiquity, seizing and plundering ships. In antiquity, they hid in small coves along the indented coastline of Cilicia, a region generally located between the Lamas and Melas rivers, and difficult to reach by land. These sea bandits were known in history as "Cilician pirates." Cilicia provided a favorable geography for these pirates.
